Default OSX Upgrade Incomplete

I recently inherited a nice G4, because the graphics company that owned it upgraded. It was fully functional when I got it.

I tried to upgrade to OSX and now it won't work properly. The installation of the new OS was only partially successful and now I cannot install any new software on it. I tried to redo it, start from scratch but get the same problem each of the three times I tried.

Any ideas?

I don't have support no. And I am not getting any errors messages, instead just everything fails to install. It looks like it's going, then stops midway and does nothing more. Doesn't matter if the install is from a disk or from a downloaded file.
