Question IPtables

How familiar are you with iptables? How do you use iptables in your configuration?

Firewall, packet filtering, forwarding, ip masquarading, etc ...

How do you use IPTABLES?

I use it in my Firewall for blocking IPs but I don't do anything manual. I don't know much about IPTABLEs manual commands. Where is a good place to learn?

Netfilter is the system that provides iptables, and their website is netfilter/iptables project homepage - The netfilter.org project. Their documentation is located at netfilter/iptables project homepage - Documentation about the netfilter/iptables project and at the bottom of the page is a list of links to various tutorials

A couple of good books I'd suggest as well are:

Linux IPTABLES pocket reference an O'Reilly series book and Linux Firewalls By Robert L. Ziegler, Carl B. Constantine which includes a full section on iptables.

Well, I wish I knew more, LOL. I've forgotten a lot of what I knew once I installed AFP, since after that I didn't really look at what iptables was doing for firewalls and such.

I've played around with it, locked myself out of systems more than once. What do *I* know about it? lol, not much, enough to be dangerous (to myself). It's one of those things thats "good to know" if you really want to know linux security at a real "root" level. :-)
