Default Change a username?

How can I change a username? I tried editing /etc/passwd but that just screwed me up. Is there anyway this can be done via the console?

You have to delete the user account and then recreate it. If you delete the user account it leaves the home directory so when you create the new account you can just "mv *" to the new home directory (don't forget to move the hidden directories).

I figured changing the username in the passwd file would work. What happened when you did that?

That's not too bad, to simply have to delete and recreate the username. If you had to do it for a lot of usernames I could see how it might get tedious.

Most of the dirty work is done via text editing etc.. I doubt there is.

Yup, there is. It just depends on your particular distro. Search through the options, you may find it somewhere.

I don't think there is. GUI's are for basic operations...
