Generally your OS gets a "lease" on the IP and this is identified by the MAC address. This wouldn't change between XP and Linux since it is hardware so yes, this is a bit strange. Maybe your lease ran up (usually last 3 days or so, may be less for your cable company - I've seen as little 3 hours).

No It's not, It's happening all the time. For example just now I was on XP and had an IP, then I restarted in Ubuntu and had another IP.
The thing is that on XP I have the same IP and on Ubuntu I have the same IP always. I mean for example if on XP I have 1.1.1.1, on XP it is always 1.1.1.1 but when I reboot on Ubuntu it is always 2.2.2.2 SO it is NOT a coincidence. In fact it's a great thing for me ![]() |
