Default Mouting USB drive in suse

I plug my USB drive in to my USB port and expected it to pop-up like a blank CD does but it does not.... I know, this sounds stupid and simple but how do I mount it?

Suse should and normally does automount your device. There are times when it fails though, and some may not be supported at all. First thing you should do is check your /media folder to see if it shows up there.

My plain Suse 10.1 nicely automounted the USB memory stick, and added it to the Places menu in Gnome, having mounted it on a mountpoint under /media.

Recently I added software updates to apply all the available patches etc to Suse 10.1. My hard disk changed from /dev/hda to /dev/sda, and the USB stick no longer automagically mounts. I can manually mount it (as /dev/sdab1).

Any ideas how to get back the old behaviour? I can't find anything in any /etc or /proc files that appears relevant.

When I try to do a mount /dev/sdab1 it says unknown device. How do I determine the address in /dev?

@sdb guest - you can add it back to your FSTAB I think and the normal automount should work.

Usually USB devices are mounted normally.

At least Ubuntu and other distros do that, I don't know why suse shouldn't.

maybe your usb drive is not compatible with Linux, that could be the thing.
