Default How to detect if it's debian etc..?

I find it a problem, when I download a distro, I don't know if it's debian-based or something else.

How can I check this?

Usually on the website it's self tells you for example it's based on debain etc..

Is it possible to type in a command in the terminal to know the kernel version and maybe if it is a debian based OS etc..?
