Finding the Perfect OS

On my desktop I dual boot with XP and Ubuntu and it's nothing fantastic IMO, it's OK. Now I'm searching for a cool and stable Linux OS for my laptop to dual boot with Vista.

I have ran various distros, and the favorite so far was freespire, but again, nothing special. I ran/run MAC on my laptop, was nothing special, I tried various distros on vmware, but they either were ugly looking, either setup did not support dualboot like the ubuntu installer, or they were complicated to install, or hard to use.. so basically I found nothing good.

I would like something easy to install like Ubuntu, very user friendly , detects hardware right away, and has a cool GUI with 3d boxes, mini/maximizing effects, transparency and extremely cool looking. I dont mind if they require a lot of resources, I currently have 3GB Ram and a 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo that can run at 2.6Ghz Core 2 Duo... so that would be a Core 2 Duo extreme, I think that's quite enough to suffice the most CPU hungry OSes.

So please send me your suggestions

Most of the Linux flavors I have used you have to customize it to look the way you want (adding docks, berly, etc.). I really like openSuse because of their Yast application. This applications makes it very easy to administer the entire Linux machine.

If you haven't tried it I recommend it. I've heard that Sabayonn Linux has all of these features right out of the box but I haven't used it myself, yet.

Is yast something like apt-get?

I did try openSuse but only for a couple of minutes on vmware and it took quite some time to install too.

No, apt-get is an application fetcher/installer. Since SuSe uses the Redhat Package Manager (RPM) structure they have "yum". So, apt-get is the equivalent of "yum".

Yast is like CPanel for your Linux OS. It stands for "Yet Another Setup Tool". It is a very powerful application tool.

Well tonight I'm going to download sabayon and maybe openSuse, I watched a review video of sabayon seems like it's similar to what I want. Maybe openSuse will be with some customizations.

I really prefer Ubuntu but you said you don't like it. Is it just because of the looks?

Both the look and the softwares installed and besides that I used it quite much (much more than I used other distros) I liked it at first but got bored after sometime.. I don't use linux as main OS but to experiment and explore this whole new world.

What features are you exactly looking for?
I think if you're new to Linux, Ubuntu is the way to go.

Maybe you can try Debian?

I just finished burning a DvD with Sabayon. I think this OS seems to have all the reqs I want. As I think I already said in another Thread, I just want to experiment and explore the world of Linux and see the power of Linux with a good graphic card and a powerful CPU, I want to unleash the power of this laptop and see a whole new dimension of hardware and software combined with each other, and I think that Linux is the way.

Ok vista is cool, but lacks a lot of the cool thing I can imagine, and I'm sure these can be found on some Linux OSes.

What made you choose sabayon over say...Ubuntu? Or Kubuntu?
