Default Kernel Only?

I know that the kernel is the core of an OS, but what will we have if we remove everything except the kernel? I mean the OS will work but what will we have? I think, no desktop, no sound, nothing.. so what can the kernel only do?

You would still have sound, keyboard, and the ability to login since the Kernel is what controls all of this. You are right, there would be no desktop.
