Default Linux and Video card problems!

Why does linux have problems with old video cards? I had a radeon 9200 pro and ubuntu and freespire would not install because of the video card. now I have a 7600 GS and it works fine. any reasons why?

I suppose this is because of no driver support for these older video cards. I would assume that the "generic" drivers would work though.

Well, yesterday I tried the live CD.. and it had some problems... I don't know why! The bottom of the screen was a little crazy with some lines etc... then I changed the resolution.. and it worked... Phew.. this is crazy.
