It does. The official BitTorrent client works fine for both Windows, Mac and Linux.

So then why not use that? Isn't that the best way to go, since its supported and created by and for bittorents?

It's a matter of taste, and the functionality is almost identical from client to client, because the Bittorrent protocol is standardized.

Isn't a BitTorrent client's function only to search for and download bittorents?
Are they all searching the same database?

Most of their functionality is of course how they're downloading torrent-files, but also extra features which may help the user. Also, you're not "just downloading" torrent-files. It's complicated to do so. If you want to know more about it, I think you shall find the BitTorrent specifications.

And no, they're not searching in the same "database." When you're searching for torrent-files, you're searching on so-called trackers. That's websites which stores the torrent-files. The torrent-files themselves contain information about where to download the content.

IMO, the official BitTorrent client is horrible. I've never seen a client that also allows searching for torrents. What I have seen you have to find torrents on your own and then insert the torrents into the client.

Many torrent-clients have the search functionality.
