Yes, I think it's the X Window System (X11) he's thinking about.
Check out X.org, here, which is an open source implementation of X11.
And check Wikipedia, here, to read about what X11 is.

I don't know if this might be of help to understand it better.

Let's explain it this way (correct me if I'm wrong) so in Linux the desktop is like any other application.. you can kill that process and you will end up with a blank screen (this is usually used on servers to save resources) the only way you will be able to use it is via SSH or something similar.. now in Windows that is not possible you will ALWAYS have a desktop no matter what.

So this application IS your desktop.. of course if you kill it you will end up without any GUI (because you will not have any desktop)

Do on Linux it is actually possible to kill your desktop? What if a newbie like me kills it incidentally?
