Default Distros

I found this neat little site today which makes me want to install a different distro every day!

http://distrowatch.com/

Looks like PCLinuxOS is on the top right now. I'm going to download and try that next. How often do you switch distros?

Indeed, it's a great site. I've used it for a long time. I can only be the second to recommend it!

What is the difference between Ubuntu and Kubuntu? I read it before, but I don't quite understand the difference...I mean they're the same OS; what is Kubuntu and Ubuntu like Windows XP Plus and Windows XP?

:\

Ubuntu comes with the desktop environment called GNOME, while Kubuntu comes with the desktop environment called KDE. There's also other Ubuntu-variants: Edubuntu, Gobuntu, Xubuntu, Mythbuntu, Ubuntu Studio, JeOS and Ubuntu Mobile. All of them are official Ubuntu-distributions and controlled by Canoncial.

I tried reading up on comparing the two (KDE and Gnome) and couldn't really find which one is better. Which do you like more?

It's simply a matter of taste. I personally prefer GNOME, because it's very simplistic, and doesn't have all the unnecessary graphics, which KDE tends to have. Another desktop environment I like too, is XFCE (which comes with Xubuntu), because it's even simpler than GNOME.

It's possible to install other desktop environments, than the standard which comes with the distribution. So you don't have to stick to the one you're using if you don't want to.

I prefer KDE but with Ubuntu it seems like Gnome is better in my opinion. I suggest you try them both or find some screen shots and determine which you like better.

It doesn't matter to me... As long as it's cool. I used various types of distros (some of them found from that website) and installed on vmware... I don't care about the desktop enviroment.

Lately I've been using the tiling window manager, Wmii (and its littlebrother, Dwm, for experimenting) instead of good ol' GNOME. Both are really great, simplistic, fast, and easy to use and configure.
