Default Eee PC

I was looking at this machine earlier this week and wondering how Linux would run on it. Has anyone had the chance to install it on there?

If I am not mistaken the Eee PC runs Linux as the default OS. I wouldn't imagine it would be hard to install another brand of Linux on it although you will have limited resources.

What version of Linux does it run though? It doesn't look like it has much functionality.

I don't own one and have never used one but I've read you can install Windows XP, Mac (not legal) or any brand of Linux on them. You do have a 2 or 4GB hard drive limit though. I wonder why so small though. They have flash drives that size now. These machines look interesting.

Well for sure a 2Gb or 4Gb limit is not good, I mean, why would they do that?? nowadays we have 4gb SDCards for storing pics etc, not a whole computer!!

My friend has one of these little machines. They are really neat and fit in most places a normal laptop wouldn't take it. That is why they are so cool IMO. I agree, 4GB is a little small.

I've read only good reviews about this laptop but I am sure I can find a better laptop for the same price somewhere else...I mean it's a single-core processor with only a 4GB hard drive going for $300-$400? That's insane; it's a Celeron processor not even at 1ghz!

Still I guess it is great with Linux...but if you bought a used or new older Windows laptop you could replace the OS and get better performance IMO.

Just a thought.

I think the size is the main attraction rather than the hardware specs....

Yeah, I think it's too small though. From the reviews I've read, a lot of people are complaining about adjusting to the keyboard because the keys are so small..

Also from what I read, the screen resolution is only 800x600, so if you view web pages optimized for 1024x768 screen resolution, you'll have to scroll to the right while viewing web pages, which would be an inconvenience for me if I had to do that..

I noticed that Sabayon has an Eee PC boot option. I wonder if that is the OS distro that comes standard on these machines.
